Korra: The Love Triangle

Description

I'm sure all of you have seen the TLA:LOK trailer by now ^^;... but, if not, here it is: [link]

I'm so beyond in love with it :D

...

Bryke spoiled a bunch of images and information along with that trailer. Most of it eye popping and stunning... but, I'm a little worried with how the information is being interpreted :(

Long ago, when we got our first taste of Korra (you remember the teaser poster of her looking over the city and the accompanying interview where we got our first look), they hinted at the emphasis of "teen love triangles" in the show.

By itself, that's not a big problem... it builds suspense and excitement in the series and incites a level of speculation that is healthy for the fan base. But, after introducing us to Mako and Bolin (the two bending brothers that will join Korra in the new "Team Avatar")... it's hard not to imagine these three characters in that triangle.

Even if that's not the case, most of the fans will likely come to that conclusion.

We are a fan base that is famous for deep, powerful ship warfare. It gets fierce... it's still fierce years after the original series ended, and news of the characters' marriages and children came out. We are stubborn; we draw our own conclusions, and we stick to them.

In the past, our conclusions were drawn from the characters themselves; how they acted, who they were. With Korra coming out next year to an established fan base, starved of new material for the equivalent of creative decades (things move faster on the internet :D)... we start our pairings with the first names and faces (just look at the Korra/Yue ship that sprang up when Korra's visage was spoiled, and the moon spirit was the only other known character in that universe).

It's not bad that we fantasize about the possibilities... but, choosing these things decidedly, and imagining these characters with our own ideal personalities will only lead to disappointment and irritation... we just can't know enough about them yet.

Spoiling the fact that there is a love triangle in the series only enhances this effect. It encourages premature expectations and undue assumptions... and eventually culminates in unhappy fans.

With this in mind, I encourage you guys to go into the new series with new eyes... watch it with open hearts and let the story tell itself. Sure, you can imagine pairings, predict how things will unfold (God knows I am :D)... but please don't be irritated if things don't unfold the way that you imagined. Don't expect anything that hasn't been specifically described, it will only lead to disappointment (they can't please everyone :blushes:). Reserve you ultimate decisions about the characters and relationships until after you really meet them.

If you can do this, I can guarantee that you will enjoy the show... no matter what you ship. Mike and Bryan are amazing writers, they craft beautiful stories. Whatever they do, however they do it... it will be great. We have the entire ATLA show to prove it.

....

BTW... the idea here is that everyone seems to know about the love triangle but Korra herself... she hasn't lived the events of the show yet.

....

Korra belongs to Mike, Bryan and Nick. Art belongs to me.
